As any regular WordPress user will tell you, the default WordPress login screen isn’t much fun.
That same plain, grey background; the boring blue WordPress logo. There’s nothing going on there to excite us, so most don’t give it a second thought.
But did you know, you can fully customize the WordPress login page? Today I’m going to show you exactly how to do this — if you want to further customize the WordPress interface, here are some tips for customizing the dashboard.
Before we get started with the tutorial, though, here are three good reasons to customize the WordPress login page.
I’m sure you’ve heard that word a lot: branding.
When it comes to the hyper-competitive online environment, branding is everything. Your brand will shape how your customers perceive you, and can also differentiate you from your competition.
If you’re running a website where your customers access your login page – for example, a membership website – then the default WordPress login page just doesn’t cut it.
If those customers are paying good money, first impressions are everything. In my personal opinion, the default login page looks amateurish, and I’d expect to see a professional business take the time and effort to brand all aspects of their website.
You’ll also find that your custom login page will reinforce your brand – visitors see it every time they login to your website, and this will grow a sense of familiarity and loyalty towards your brand.
2. Client Websites
It’s the small touches that really matter when you work with clients.
I know if I’d spent a small fortune on a website, I’d be a little disappointed if the first thing I saw was the plain, boring WordPress login screen.
This also applies to the websites you manage for clients. A custom, branded login page communicates to your client that you know what you’re doing and you have everything under control.
The login page doesn’t make a huge difference, but it’s just one more thing you’ve taken care of for your client – and that can only strengthen your relationship.
Even if you’re the only person accessing your login page, that doesn’t mean you have to put up with the same old design, does it? Without doubt, a custom login page is much better to look at.
If a custom login page can improve your WordPress experience by even the tiniest amount, then in my opinion it’s worth the few minutes it will take to set things up.
How to Customize the WordPress Login Page
If you’re sold on the benefits of a custom login page, allow me to switch into tutorial-mode to show you how to set one up.
Now, there are a number of ways to customize the WordPress login page, but the easiest way is by using a plugin – this means you won’t need to touch a single line of code, either.
To install the A5 Custom Login Page plugin, from the WordPress dashboard click Plugins > Add New.
From there, search for “A5 Custom Login Page”. It should be the first plugin returned, but just in case, the plugin looks something like this:
When you’ve found it, click Install Now then Activate Plugin. If you’ve ever installed a WordPress before, you’ll be very familiar with this process.
With the plugin installed, you should be able to see a new A5 Custom Login option added to the dashboard sidebar menu.
A5 Custom Login allows you to customize every element of the login screen, and you can actually go into a good amount of detail. However, I’m going to keep it simple, and focus on customizing the three main elements of the login page: the background, the logo, and the login form.
If you want a reminder of what the default login page looks like, here’s a screenshot:
Custom Login Page Background
After accessing the A5 interface, you’ll see a row of tabs at the top of the screen.
Let’s start by customizing the background, so click on the Body & Submit Button tab.
From here, you can choose to display a full-page background image, or use a background color – you can select two colors if you want, allowing you to create a stylish gradient effect.
In my opinion, a background image is the most eye-catching option. Go ahead and upload a background image by clicking Select Image and picking the one you want from your media library.
Scrolling down the screen to the Submit Button section, you are able to customize the login button. There are a variety of options for you to play around with, including button color, hover button color, and text color. After selecting the colors you want, be sure to click Save Changes.
As you make changes, you’ll probably want to view a preview of your new login screen. To save you logging out, A5 includes a Preview tab located at the far right of the screen. Click this whenever you want, to make sure you’re happy with your changes.
With my background and button customized, my login screen looks something like this:
Custom Login Page Logo
With the background configured, click on the Logo tab to change the default, blue WordPress logo.
On the Logo screen, select your logo from your media library the same way as before: by clicking Select Image. If you don’t want a logo, you can check the box to have no logo at all. You can also choose the target URL should a visitor click your logo.
It’s worth pointing out that by default, the WordPress logo is 84 pixels by 84 pixels. If your logo is bigger than this, make sure you correctly configure the logo dimension settings.
If you’ve already configured your background, this screen should be really easy to figure out.
Custom Login Page Form
The third main element on the login page is the login form. You can customize this by clicking on the Login Form tab.
You can add a custom background image to your login form, but in my opinion a solid background color works best.
Test out a few different colors by clicking the Select Color buttons, and try to create a combination you like the look of — view your changes from the Preview tab. If you don’t like something, you can always reset it back to the default setting by clicking Select Color then Clear.
And that’s all there is to it! The A5 Custom Login Page interface is really easy to use, and I had my custom login page set up in just a few minutes – it looks good, doesn’t it?
Adding a Video to a Login Page
I know I said I’d stick to the login page’s three main design elements, but there is one really cool thing the A5 plugin can do: add a video to your login page. This is done via the Video tab.
You can choose a video from your media library, or you can embed one directly from YouTube by pasting the video’s URL into the blank field.
This is a really awesome way to create a memorable login page, especially if you run a membership site – you could personally greet your members via your video.
If you want to include a video, your login page can get a little cluttered, so be sure to head back to the Logo tab and check the box to hide the logo.
A custom login page is great for branding, will impress your clients, and is just plain fun.
Using a plugin like A5 Custom Login Page, creating a beautiful, custom login page is incredibly easy. You have complete control over all on-page elements, allowing you to craft something truly unique to greet you every time you use WordPress.
